Broncos blow Cyclones away
The Clarendon Broncos are District Champions once again. They sealed the championship at home Friday night against Memphis with one game to play as of press time.
The 68-47 win was a just one more example of how strong the Broncos are this year and their unchallenged dominance on the court. According to head coach Brandt Lockhart; the game was topped off by great offensive play.
“We had a season high of 19 rebounds,” Lockhart said. “And we did a good job of forcing turnovers.”
The Broncos reigned supreme against Memphis from the tip off and led by 20 plus points at the break. Not only did their offensive play set the tempo of the game, the Broncos hustled defensively and frustrated their opponent.
Seniors Johnny Gaines and Brayden Phillips teamed up for seven of the Broncos’ three-pointers with Phillips turning five from the three-point line.
The Broncos also controlled the boards and used their strength to muscle their opponent.
Mike and Chris Crump showed a lot of power inside, and sophomores Cole Ward and Adam Topper came in and continued the dominance under the basket. Justin Shillings, Daniel West, Wes Williams, and newcomer Diego Santos helped around the perimeter.
The Broncos were able to coast the second half as they led by 30 after three.
Scoring: Gaines 22, Phillips 20, Ward 7, Shillings 8, M. Crump 5, C. Crump 2, Williams 2, and Topper 2.
The Broncos will continue their schedule in post-season play at a time to be announced.
Broncos roll on in District
The Broncos continued their dominance of District 3-1A last week as they rolled to a 6-0 record in District play.
Last Wednesday the Broncos took down Wheeler 60-39 on the road. Seniors Johnny Gaines and Brayden Phillips teamed up and accounted for 44 of the Broncos’ total points.
The Broncos pulled ahead by 10 early in the game and held their point-spread until the final quarter of play. Their defense held the Mustangs to only seven points while they put in 18.
“We shot the ball well,” head coach Brandt Lockhart said. “We did a good job of causing turnovers that gave us easy baskets.”
Senior Johnny Gaines accounted for 30 of Clarendon’s points, and Brayden Phillips also finished in double figures with 14.
Also scoring: Mike Crump 6, Cole Ward 4, Justin Shillings 2, Daniel West 2, and Chris Crump 2.
On Friday, the Broncos wiped out another foe when they defeated Wellington at home 57-46. The Broncos jumped out to the lead in the first half of play, but the Rockets would not give up. Clarendon gained a little ground in the fourth period to seal the win. Gaines and M. Crump finished in double figures with 25 and 11 points.
“We got a lot of offensive rebounds, which helped us get more chances to score,” Lockhart said.
Also scoring: Shillings 7, Phillips 5, Ward 5, and C. Crump 4.
The Broncos will play Memphis at home February 11 and travel to Quanah February 15 to end their regular season. Games will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Broncos slam opponents, 61-24
The Cyclones never gave the Broncos any competition as they used their defensive pressure to make easy baskets. Up by thirty points in the third quarter, the Broncos were able to coast to the win.
“We played well defensively,” coach Brandt Lockhart said. “They couldn’t handle our pressure; and in the third quarter, our defensive pressure caused several turnovers and were got the easy baskets.”
Scoring: Johnny Gaines 17, Brayden Phillips 10, Chris Crump 10, Justin Shillings 6, Adam Topper 6, Mike Crump 4, Daniel West 4, Cody Wood 2, and Cole Ward 2.
The Broncos held the Indians to only three fourth quarter points, which proved to be the game sealer for the Broncos in their romp over Quanah at home Friday night. The Broncos jumped on them early and stayed strong offensively to get the big win. Quanah tried to answer in the third quarter of play, but the Bronco defense was too tough to get anything going.
Gaines and Phillips connected on 20 and 18 points to lead the Broncos on the scoreboard, and C. Crump added nine for the win.
“We continue to play good defense, and I was proud of everyone’s effort,” Lockhart said.
Also scoring: Topper 4, West 3, Shillings 2, and Ward 2.
The Broncos will play Wellington at home Friday, February 4 and play Memphis at home February 11. They will play Quanah February 15 on the road.
Lady Broncos win
After playing the first quarter to a 12-12 tie, the Lady Broncos stepped up their game and went ahead by four at the break.
They came out in the second half and played hustle basketball to open up a 10-point lead on Memphis.
Offensively, the ladies executed well and stayed strong defensively. Jentry Shadle had a great game posting 25 points and McKayla Cartwright added 10 from her inside spot.
Also scoring: Anna Ceniceros 7, Trevela Dronzek 6, Lydia Howard 4, and Danielle Ford 3.
The ladies took on Quanah at home Friday night and outplayed the Lady Indians for three quarter, but fell short in the fourth losing 42-50.
Things got quiet for the Lady Broncos in the fourth period and Quanah took advantage of the cold streak to go up and get the win. “I felt that the girls played extremely hard, but I have not seen us pay an entire game,” head coach Molly Weatherred said. “We played three out of the four quarters, and we have to start putting complete games together.”
Scoring: Shadle 12, Cartwright 11, Dronzek 5, L. Howard 5, Deborah Howard 4, Jency Burton 2, Ceniceros 2, and Ford 1.

Broncos outplay Sky Rockets
The Broncos are proving themselves as the top team in the area staying true to form Friday night at Wellington. The Broncos defeated the Rockets 69-51.
According to head coach Brandt Lockhart; the Rockets played the Broncos tough in the first quarter of play with the Broncos holding a slight five-point lead. Great execution offensively helped the Broncos to increase their lead before the break. Clarendon came on strong in the third quarter to put the game away.
“They played us tough the first quarter, but we came out in the third and played well,” Lockhart said. “We got up by 30 points in the third quarter. Our third bench played well for us.”
Johnny Gaines had a great scoring game with 25 points to lead the Broncos on the scoreboard. Brayden Phillips and Mike Crump hit double figures with 12 and 10 points. Also scoring: Cole Ward 9, Chris Crump 7, and Justin Shillings 6.
The Broncos will take on Quanah at home January 28 at 7:30 p.m. and travel to Wheeler February 1.

Broncos, Lady Broncos participate in tourneys
The Clarendon Broncos made a good showing at the Caprock Fibermax Tournament in Lubbock with two wins and two losses. Both losses, one to Idalou and one to Bronte, were against state-ranked teams.
The Broncos opened the tournament with a big win against Presido at 65-38. It was never really a contest as the Broncos held their opponent to single digits in the first half of play. All-around player Johnny Gaines led the Bronco scorers with 29.
Also scoring: Justin Shillings 9, Brayden Phillips 7, Cole Ward 6, Adam Topper 6, Mike Crump 4, Chris Crump 2, and Wes Williams 2.

The Broncos went out strong in the third game of the contest and easily defeated New Deal, 46-65. Clarendon totally dominated their opponent as they executed on both ends of the court. Three Broncos finished in double figures with Gaines leading the way with 19 and Phillips and M. Crump added 11 each of their own. As a team, the Broncos shot an impressive 82 percent from the free throw line.
Also scoring: Ward 8, Shillings 6, C. Crump 4, Topper 4, and Williams 2.
The Broncos then went to the Consolation round and faced Bronte. They were narrowly defeated at 44-47. The Broncos led at the end of the first half, but the inside play of Bronte helped with their win. Foul trouble plagued the Broncos, and they could never get into their game. Despite the outcome, coach Brandt Lockhart was pleased with the Broncos’ play.
“Overall, we played well,” Lockhart said. “We had two off games against Idalou and Bronte, but they are state-ranked teams.”
