18-hole night scramble success at country club
The Clarendon Country Club hosted an 18-hole scramble last Saturday with nine of the holes being played after dark.
The club rented the necessary equipment, which included lighted golf balls and light sticks on the hole flags, to aid them in the scramble.
Fifty-four players made up nine teams that played the first nine holes in the daylight. After a short meal break, the golfers took to the course in the dark to finish the scramble.
The team of Doug Kidd, Mark Morris, Kenny Black, Brett White, Bobbie Kidd, and Sunday Morris turned in an eleven under 61 to win the contest.
The team of Junior Rodriguez, John Myers, Mikael McKinney, Gene Ferris, Kevin Roberson, and Edward McKinney finished second with a 62, and third place went to the team of George Leathers, Bill Auvenshine, Wes Smith, Michael Thompson, Amanda Smith, and Tom Thompson with a 63.
Five teams competed in the Friday night scramble with two teams coming in at seven under par. After a putt-off, the team of Doug Kidd, Gail Leathers, Larry Lincycomb, and Caleb Wood took first place.
The putt-off was with the team of Mike Santos, Sandy Anderberg, Gene Ferris, Danny Sides, and Forrest Newton who also finished at seven under. The other teams came in at six and five under par.
Bo Morrison won the weekly men’s game on Wednesday with a net 67. Todd Curry and Mike Santos tied for second with a 68, and Steve Jarnagin and Charlie Davis took third place with a 69. Sherol Johnston won the weekly women’s game on Thursday with a gross 78.
Low net went to Ouida Gage with a 63, and second low net was won by Maxine McLaughlin with a 67.
Sandy Anderberg won low gross in the Monday women’s game with an 83. McLaughlin won first low net with a 62, and Ouida Gage was second low net with a 64.
The pool and grill will remain open through Labor Day and the dining room will be hope each Friday night and Sunday at noon. The nine-hole scrambles will be held each Friday night at 6:00 p.m. You may call the Pro Shop for more information.
All-Stars heading for state
The nine- to ten-year-old All Star baseball team will advance to the state tournament in Denver City, Texas, during July 10-15 after competing well in the District tournament last weekend.
The team consists of 14 players and is coached under manager Jeremy Hicks, Brad Elam, Cameron Word and Casey Cobb. They played on June 26 and 27 and lost to North Randall and Hereford but won to Canyon.
“I’m proud of the boys,” Hicks said. “This is a huge accomplishment for Clarendon’s baseball program to beat Canyon and compete well against schools so much bigger than us.”
The team consists of 14 boys all but one of whom is from Clarendon. They are Garrett Barnett of Panhandle along with Clarendon’s Joshua Cobb, Damarjae Cortez, Andy Davis, Noab Elam, Preston Elam, Ben Haney, Payton Hicks, Payton Havens, Kade Hunsaker, Nathan Shadle, Raylyn Shelton, and Colt Wood. Also on the team is Gavin Word, who did not play this past weekend but will be playing in Denver City.
The All Stars will compete in an eight double elimination tournament in the state competition. They are guaranteed two games, and if they win, they will advance to the regional tournament at the end of July.
“These boys are getting better every day. We want to keep it going as long as we can.”
Golfer Ashford shoots his age
Ninety year old golfer Dan Ashford recently shot his age at Clarendon Country Club. His round of 90 in the weekly men’s game was witnessed by Butch Schollenbarger and Jeff Walker.
Steve Jarnagin won the men’s play day with a net 67, and Todd Curry was second with a 68.
Ashford’s gross score of 90 turned into a net score of 70 with his handicap and earned him a third place finish.
Sandy Anderberg won low gross in the women’s day on Thursday with a 79, and Sherol Johnston was second low gross with an 87. Ruth Jackson won low net with a 64 and Mary Ann Sawyer, Bonnie Crofford, and Gayle Rogers tied for second low net with a 69.
Five teams competed in the Friday night nine-hole scramble, and two teams tied for the top spot, which ended in a tie after a three-putt playoff. The team of Norm Hagood, Gene Rogers, Chirs Moore, Sherol Johnston, and Gary Roye tied with the team of Chris Linquist, Steve Hall, Jesse Lincycomb, and Jeff Henson. The other three teams came in at six, five, and three under par.
There will be an 18-hole scramble Sunday, July 4, beginning at 2:00 p.m. You may call the Pro Shop to enter. The pool are grill are open each day and the dining room is open every Friday night and Sunday at noon.
Broncos succumb to Stamford
A great baseball season was just a few errors away from being an even better season as the Area Champions fell to Stamford in the last two games of the two-out-of-three series last weekend in the Regional Quarterfinals.
The Broncos, who finished the season with an outstanding 19-6 record, took the first game 1-0 last Wednesday in Ralls.
According to coach Brad Elam, the Broncos did everything right in that first game.
“It was a great ballgame,” Elam said. “Great pitching and defense from both sides.
“We hit the ball decent, but weren’t able to push across any runs until the sixth when we did capitalize on their only error. Pitching and defense were the key and we played well.”
Game two was played on Saturday at Lubbock Christian High School and the Broncos lost 7-16.
“The game was not as bad as the score,” Elam said. “We had a 3-1 lead going into the sixth inning.”
According to Elam, Troy Chambless was on the mound and pitched four good innings.
“We just couldn’t get anything going on offense,” he said. “We had our chances, but the story of the day was not being able to drive runners in once they got into scoring position.”
Brayden Phillips and Troy Chambless each had two hits in the game, and Phillips drove in two runs and Chambless drove in three.
“The story of this game was the sixth inning,” Elam said. “We were up 3-1 with two outs in the sixth, (we had) a couple of missed opportunities, and they scored nine runs for the big lead.”
If the Broncos could have gotten past that inning, it might have been a completely different ending for the series.
Game three of the series was played immediately after game two with Stamford taking control early to get the 7-5 win.
“Again, missed opportunities cost us in this game,” Elam said. “We made some good defensive plays, but we did make too many errors and gave them too many runs. We picked a bad game to have our worst defensive game.”
Elam went on to say that they were able to do some positive things on offense but
were unable to push runs across early when they had runners in scoring position.
“We had runners on all game, (and) we had 15 hits and four walks but couldn’t get enough timely hits.
“We had a chance the last inning, with two runners on, but were not able to score them.”
He noted that Colter Goolsby, Johnny Gaines, Brady Miller, and Caleb Mitchell all had three hits in the game. Miller drove in four runs and hit great in the playoffs.
“We had chances in both games to win but were not able to get it done,” Elam said.

Clarendon advances to regional quarter-finals
Two games and 11 innings later, the Clarendon Broncos are the Area Round Champions and a tough contender in the Regional Quarter-finals this week.
They blasted Nazareth in the best two-out-of-three series at Sandie Field in Amarillo when they gained a 10-run rule win two times in the contest. They mustered 30 runs in the two games while holding the Swifts to only three for the two games. They won 17-2 in Game 1 on Tuesday and 13-1 on Saturday at Littlefield High School.
Johnny Gaines opened the series on Tuesday and was virtually unstoppable. He had a no-hitter going for the first four innings and struck out 12 batters while on the mound.
Offensively, the Broncos were hitting on all cylinders as everyone in the lineup scored at least one run in the game.
“We jumped on them early in the first by scoring four runs,” coach Brad Elam said. “Troy Chambless drove in the first run on a base hit to the right, and Forrest Yelverton drove in Chambless, and we scored twice more that inning on singles by David Roberts and Brady Miller with two outs.”
Elam went on to say that Brayden Phillips squeezed in Matt Henderson after Henderson tripled in the second. Yelverton and Justin Shillings went on to hit doubles in the third inning that scored four more runs.
According to Elam, the Broncos’ bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth when they scored eight runs.
“Henderson had an RBI double and Colter Goolsby drive in two with an inside-the-park
homerun and Gaines added a triple,” Elam said.
Defensively, Gaines did the job from the mound, but several players made great plays as well. Phillips was part of that defensive dominance when he threw a runner out who was trying to steal. The Broncos were determined to get the Area championship in only two games and made that happen on Saturday with the 13-1 win.
“We started out a little closer than I would have liked, but we were able to turn it on in the later innings,” Elam said. “Johnny Gaines got things started in the first inning by doubling, and Troy Chambless singled him in for the first run of the game.”
Chambless also controlled the Nazareth offense from the mound allowing only one run in the game, which was scored in the first inning. Their bats were on fire and the Broncos turned singles, doubles, and stolen bases into pay dirt every inning.
“Chambless added a monster home run to the right in the sixth inning,” Elam said. “We really hit well this series, and we stole 15 bases in the second game. Brady Miller and Matt Henderson reached base all four times and had a great series. Miller and Gaines racked up three runs each and Yelverton, Roberts, and Henderson scored two runs each.
“Chambless was dominant on the mound,” Elam said. He struck out 12 while only walking one and gave up only four hits according to Elam.
“I was really pleased with our effort in this series and I know everyone appreciated the great fan support,” Elam said.
The Broncos will take on Stamford Wednesday, May 19, at 6:00 p.m. in Ralls in the
Regional Quarter-final round. They will play a second game on Saturday, May 22, at Lubbock Christian High School at 4:00 p.m.
Broncos clinch district championship
Once again, the Clarendon Broncos claimed a District Championship and clobbered Paducah 12-0 in five innings in their final district match up.
The Broncos finished their 2010 season at 14-3 overall and 11-1 in District play.
The win will put them in a good spot for the playoffs and give them an edge going in.
“This was a big game for us,” coach Brad Elam said. “We were able to clinch first place out right with the win. We have shared first place the last two years and the kids were determined to not share it this year.”
According to Elam, the Broncos started off strong when Johnny Gaines crushed a two-run homerun and Forrest Yelverton singled home a run for a 3-0 lead.
“Our bats were quiet for an inning before Gaines added his second home run of the game in the third,” Elam said.
“Matt Henderson and Brayden Phillips scored in the fourth before we busted the game open with six runs in the fifth.”
Elam went on to say that Phillips also had a big two-run triple followed by a hard hit ball by Colter Goolsby that reached the fence. And then Goolsby came all the way home on a hit. Troy Chambless pitched four strong innings for the Broncos to go 7-0 on the year and Gaines came into pitch the last inning and struck out the side to seal the win.
The Broncos will play Follett in Borger Friday, May 7, at 4:30 p.m. in a warm-up game to prepare for post-season play, which will be announced at a later time.
Broncos; Lady Broncos take home wins
The bottom of the fifth was just what the Broncos needed to put the finishing touches on their 11-1 win over Fritch at home on Saturday.
The Broncos were well on their way to a win, but left no doubt in the fifth as they closed it out. According to coach Brad Elam, the Broncos played a pretty good game, starting out slowly, but finishing big.
“We scored one (run) in the first inning when Troy Chambless singled in Colter Goolsby,” Elam said. “David Roberts scored one in the second, and Brayden Phillips drove in Josh Krumwiede in the fourth.”
Then came the big guns as Johnny Gaines and Chambless started things off with homeruns. Roberts then drove in a run when he walked with the bases loaded scoring Forest Yelverton. Bradley Watson drove in Krumwiede and Brady Miller. Goolsby fired one off to allow Phillips to score to end the inning.
“Chambless and Goolsby pitched five good innings,” Elam said. “And we played well on defense.”
The Broncos will play River Road at home Friday, April 16, beginning at 4:30 p.m. and will play a District game at home Saturday, April 17, against Quanah at 1:00 p.m. They will travel to Memphis Tuesday, April 20.
The Lady Broncos defeat WT High
Nine runs in the sixth inning catapulted the Lady Broncos to a big win over West Texas High at home last Tuesday night. When the sixth inning started, the ladies were only up by one run, but when it ended they had accumulated a 10-point advantage.
Junior hurler Danielle Ford was on the mound and threw 10 strikeouts. Dominique Mason was behind the plate.
Offensively, the Lady Broncos hit the ball well, but according to head coach Gary Jack, everything the ladies hit went right at somebody.
“We were busting the ball hard, but they were able to get to them,” Jack said. “We finally got things going when Jentry (Shadle) hit a homerun with runners on base. It was a close game until the sixth when it really cut loose.”
The Lady Broncos batted around in the sixth with 13 players hitting the ball and scoring. Jack gave credit to several players for good hits. Jentry Shadle had the homerun, and Emily Clark came up with a double. Elissa Holland, Erin Moore, Trevela Dronzek Brandi Mays, Caitlyn Christopher, and Dominique Mason all hit the ball well.
“We just played a solid game,” Jack said.
Right now the Lady Broncos are 6-0 in District play with just a few regular season games left and as of last week, they are ranked number nine in the state.
The ladies will play McLean at home Saturday, April 17, at home beginning at 4:00 p.m. They will travel to Follett Tuesday, April 20.
The junior varsity squad also defeated West Texas, 11-1, last week.
Broncos beat Electra, Paducah
The Clarendon Broncos continue to roll and ousted Electra 11-0 and Paducah 14-2.
On Saturday, the Broncos took on River Road and lost by one run at 9-10. Johnny Gaines was on the mound.
According to coach Brad Elam, the Broncos started out really hot scoring all 11 runs in the first three innings against Electra on the road Tuesday night.
“We cooled off after that,” Elam said. “(I) Thought we were really focused and ready to play, but it looked like we lost a little of that when we got up big.”
Brayden Phillips, Johnny Gaines, and David Roberts scored two runs each. Gaines had three RBI, Brady Miller, Troy Chambless, and Bradley Watson had two RBI. Gaines and Roberts each had two hits in the game.
“Gaines pitched a good game giving up only one hit, and we played good defense,” Elam said.
On Friday the Broncos hosted Paducah and won easily at 14-2.
“We started slow in this game but heated up in the last two innings by scoring 10 runs,” Elam said. “Phillips started the game with an inside the park homerun, but we were unable to get rolling until the third.”
Phillips and Colter Goolsby scored three runs and had three hits. Phillips had three RBI, Goolsby, and Josh Krumwiede drove in two runners. Gaines and Goolsby had four stolen bases and Forrest Yelverton and Krumwiede stole three bases. Chambless got the win upping his mark to 5-0.
The Broncos traveled to River Road Saturday and narrowly lost 9-10.
“We needed to face a good team to get some other pitchers ready, but we needed to face good pitching,” Elam said. “We got behind1-4 early but were able to fight back and take a lead going into the last inning. We struggled early hitting four batters and walking one, giving up a few hits, but we settled down.”
Goolsby took over the honors from the mound in the fourth and the Broncos were able to shut them down for three innings.
“Offensively, we were able to score nine runs but did have some problems,” Elam said.
“We struck out too many times (10) and left base runners in scoring position. We have only played 2 seven-inning games, and we were able to pitch some different players so this was good for us. Of course we would have liked a better outcome.”
The Broncos will host Sanford Fritch at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 10, and play Wellington at home Monday, April 12, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Rescuers save two Amarillo painters
Two Amarillo contractors are lucky to be alive after succumbing to toxic fumes in a rural Donley County location last week.
Sheriff Butch Blackburn said Ricky Lovato and his son, Jerry Wayne Lavato, were working at Melvin Edes place east of Clarendon last Tuesday, March 30, and did not return home when they were expected. Worried relatives called the sheriff’s office, and
Deputy Vincent Morasco was dispatched to the worksite.
Upon arrival, Morasco found the two men unconscious in the basement where they had been spraying lacquer – a highly flammable substance that emits toxic fumes. The deputy immediately called for EMS and for the Clarendon Volunteer Fire Department’s Rescue Squad and also instructed the dispatcher to launch two helicopters.
Morasco, Chancey Cruce, and Deputy Kelly Hill were able to get the younger Lovato out
of the building, and volunteer firemen suited up and rescued the father. CPR had to be performed on one of the subjects.
Jerry Wayne Lovato was transported by Associated Ambulance Authority and then by Lifestar to Amarillo, and Ricky Lovato was transported by ambulance and then by AeroCare to Lubbock.
“Due to the swift work of deputies and the fire department, it is believed both men will make a full recovery,” Sheriff Blackburn said. “There’s no doubt they would not have survived if the deputy hand not checked on them. The deputies, firemen, and EMS need to be commended greatly for a job well done.”
