The Clarendon Broncos hosted Panhandle in their season opener in Bronco Stadium last Friday night; and despite playing hard, the Broncos lost 12-32.
Penalties seem to hinder the Broncos’ attempts to gain any ground against the Panthers.
The Broncos’ first two games on the schedule are tough ones with Trinity Christian this week after the loss to the Panhandle. But the Broncos played with a lot of energy and will continue to rely on their ability to run the routes and quickness in the backfield to score TDs.
Panhandle racked up 221 yards rushing and 105 yards passing for a total of 326 yards in the win. The Broncos had a good night passing the ball. Senior QB Harrison Howard passed for 185 yards in 15 attempts and the Broncos posted 126 rushing yards for 311 overall yards. Howard also had six carries for 24 rushing yards and one tackle on defense. Mason Sims had 56 yards on five catches and accounted for a Bronco touchdown. Lyric Smith was two for 18 in the air and had eight carries and one TD on the ground.
Jaxan McAnear posted 39 total yards on the ground on three carries, with the longest run being 22 yards and Easton Frausto carried twice for 27 yards. Shane Hagood ran the ball 12 times for 42 yards with 11 yards as his longest.
Defensively, the Broncos made good stops throughout the night.
Sims, Jared Musick, and Grant Haynes racked up seven tackles each with Sims getting a QB sack, and Musick getting two tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Finishing the game with six tackles each was Frausto, Colton Benson, and Anthony Ceniceros. Benson and Ceniceros were able to cause a loss on the play tackling behind the line of scrimmage. Smith had four tackles and one interception, McAnear had four tackles and one tackle behind the line, and Dalton Coles racked up four tackles. Waite Dushay, Ranger Drenth, Howard, and Hagood each posted one tackle in the game.
